Biomedical Research and Industry Day Held at LSU Shreveport

Students and faculty from Louisiana Tech University, Jamie Newman, and Grambling State University, Paul Kim, partnered to monitor SARS-CoV-2 in local wastewater.  The recent publication in PLoS One represents the work of undergraduates at these PUI campuses and critical work in an area of community health thanks to support of the Lincoln Parish institutions, the LBRN, and the Rockefeller Foundation.

LATECH & GSU partnered to monitor SARS-CoV-2 in local wastewater

Students and faculty from Louisiana Tech University, Jamie Newman, and Grambling State University, Paul Kim, partnered to monitor SARS-CoV-2 in local wastewater.  The recent publication in PLoS One represents the work of undergraduates at these PUI campuses and critical work in an area of community health thanks to support of the Lincoln Parish institutions, the LBRN, and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Dr. Cory Coehoorn, Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Health Science at LSU Shreveport presents three research studies at the 2022 American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting in San Diego, California

Dr. Cory Coehoorn, Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Health Science at LSU Shreveport, recently presented three research studies at the 2022 American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. The three presentations were all related to his work with firefighters. The presentations were titled “Cortisol Responses Among Volunteer and Paid-on-call Firefighters Responding to Calls at Night,” “Effect of Sleep and Shift Characteristics on Heart Rate Variability in Wildland Firefighters,” and “Subjective and Objective Fatigue in Wildland Firefighting.”

Caleb Charpentier from Southeastern Louisiana University awarded a Graduate Research Fellowship NSF

Caleb Charpentier from Southeastern Louisiana University was recently awarded a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation to pursue a Ph.D at Virginia Tech starting in the Fall. Only two of these prestigious fellowships were awarded to students from Louisiana last year. Caleb had worked with Dr. April Wright for 5 semesters under an LBRN grant. He is also the first author on a recently published article in  the journal Methods in Ecology and Evolution, entitled "Revticulate: An R framework for interaction with RevBayes."

2022 9th Annual Louisiana Conference on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Awards are made for Poster presentations by graduate and undergraduate LBRN project affiliated and PUI campus poster presentation participants.

LATECH Dr. David Mills receives publication award

April 15, 2022

Dr. David Mills, a professor in Biological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering, has received an award for his publication on 3D Printing Custom Bioactive and Absorbable Surgical Screws, Pins, and Bone Plates for Localized Drug Delivery. The publication was ranked number one in the Journal of Functional Biomaterials 2021 Highly Cited Paper awards. Along with co-authors Dr. Karthik Tappa, Dr. Udayabhanu Jammalamadaka, and Dr. Jeffery A. Weisman, Mills wrote this publication to address more patient specialized treatment. Dr. Mills has been a recipient of translational project funding from the LBRN.

LATECH, GSU partner for Health Fair

Louisiana Tech University and Grambling State University co-hosted a health fair from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 outside the LATECH Ropp Center, to encourage staff, faculty, and students – as well as the community – to be conscious of their mental and physical health as Spring Quarter begins. LATECH and GSU are Primary PUI partners of the LBRN. Both Drs. Newman and Kim have been recipients of full project funding from the LBRN. Dr. Kim is the Core Liaison for the BBC Core at Grambling.

LSU Shreveport Dr. Elahe Mahdavian published in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics.

Dr. Elahe Mahdavian, Professor of Biochemistry at LSU Shreveport and also LBRN Molecular and Cell Biology Resources Core liaison, recently published "YM155 induces DNA damage and cell death in anaplastic thyroid cancer cells by inhibiting DNA topoisomerase IIα at the ATP binding site” on Molecular Cancer Therapeutics.

LSU Shreveport Graduate Student and LBRN Student Researcher crowned Miss City of Lights 2022

Pearl Merry with her poster at the SouthEast Regional IDeA meeting which took place November 12-14, 2021 in Puerto Rico, LSU Shreveport graduate student and LBRN student researcher, crowned Miss City of Lights 2022 and headed to Miss Louisiana Pageant.

Dr. Urska Cvek, Dr. Marjan Trutschl, Professors of Computer Science, and Phillip Kilgore, Research Scientist, from the Laboratory for Advanced Biomedical Informatics at LSU Shreveport recently published two articles.

Dr. Joseph Chaney has published the following paper "(2021) Allostery in Proteins: Canonical Models and New Insights" in Encyclopedia of Biological Chemistry.

Xavier University of Louisiana Researcher receives patent

Dr. Galina Goloverda of the Xavier University of Louisiana, who received project funding from LBRN, applied for and received a patent for her research on "Methods Of Solvent Removal At Ambient Temperatures - Cryovap" with co-inventor, Dr. Vladimir Kolesnichenko.

The Rockefeller Foundation Awards Grant to LSUHS to Strengthen Genomic Sequencing to Respond to Pandemic Threat; Dr. Paul Kim to Lead Effort at GSU

The Rockefeller Foundation awarded $340,000 to former LBRN PIs Paul Kim (Grambling State University) and Jamie Newman (Louisiana Tech University) in collaboration with co-PI Jeremy Kamil (LSU Health Shreveport) to join the Rockefeller Foundation’s Pandemic Prevention Institute.

Southeastern Louisiana University biologist awarded $1,125,000 National Science Foundation Grant

Southeastern Louisiana University Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences April Wright (LBRN PI) has been awarded a five-year grant of $1,125,000 by the National Science Foundation to integrate information from the fossil record with data collected from living species to infer phylogenetic relationships.

LSU Heath Researcher receives $750k NASA grant

Dr. Xiao-Hong Lu, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Neuroscience at LSU Health Shreveport, received a $750,000 grant from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Biological and Physical Sciences Division’s Space Biology Program to develop a novel genetic engineering technology to evaluate the impact of space radiation on the human brain. The research team includes co-investigators Dr. Lynn Harrison, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at LSU Health Shreveport; Dr. Jeffery Chancellor, Assistant Professor at LSU Baton Rouge; and Dr. Urska Cvek (LBRN PI), Professor at LSU Shreveport.

LSU Shreveport LBRN Student Senior Places First in National Competition

Shreveport, LA—LSU Shreveport senior Prerana Ramesh placed first in the Virtual Poster Presentation Competition in the 2020 UTHealth CPRIT Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program. Ramesh also claimed a finalist title in the 90-Second Elevator Speech Competition.

Tyler Tran is a Junior from Slidell pursuing a B.S in Biology concentrating in Integrative Biology and a minor in chemistry. He has served as secretary and vice-president of Delta Omega Alpha pre-professional society, Treasurer of the Biology Undergraduate Society, Ambassador for the Southeastern Honors Program, and as a member of the Honors Student Association. Tyler earned Sophomore Honors Distinction, was an Honors Freshman of the Year Finalist, and a Southeastern Male Freshman of the Year nominee.

Finalists of the 4th Annual Regional Scholars Forum

The 4th Annual LSUS Regional Scholars Forum was held on March 15, 2019 from 8 am to 4 pm at the LSUS University Center. The event allowed undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines to present original research as poster presentations or oral presentations. Each year, the Regional Scholars Forum is open to university students and their mentors from Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas, and Oklahoma.
