National
Institutes of Health Manuscript Submission (NIHMS)
The
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy requests that
researchers funded by NIH submit their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts, which
have been accepted for publication, to PubMed Center (PMC). To facilitate this
request, NIH has developed the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS), which
allows users to deposit and manage manuscripts.
Who is required
to participate in NIHMS?
For the
LBRN program specifically, you are required to participate in NIHMS if you have
received funds from the LBRN Undergraduate, Graduate or Faculty Summer and/or
Academic Year Research Program from September 2002 through the present and have
published a manuscript in relation to the research funded by the LBRN program(s)
(Submit Publications
Information – Login Required).
What
kinds of papers/publications are included in this request?
This policy
applies to peer-reviewed, original (primary) research publications that have
been supported in whole or in part with directs costs from NIH, and includes
all research grant and career development award mechanisms, cooperative
agreements, contracts, Institutional and Individual Ruth L Kirchstein National
Research Service Awards, as well as NIH intramural research studies. If a
manuscript has been accepted by a PubMed Central journal that permits free
access in 12 months or less, a separate submission to the NIHMS system is not
necessary.
What
format should I use?
Users
should submit the complete text of their manuscript(s) along with any
corresponding image files, table files, and/or supplementary materials. NIHMS
supports a wide variety of file types, such as MS Word, Word Perfect, PDF,
PowerPoint, Excel to name a few. If you choose to submit a pdf created by the
publisher the permission for this particular use must have been granted to the
author by the publisher.
Please see
the NIHMS website for more detailed information on submitting manuscripts at http://nihms.nih.gov/faq.html.
