HEALTHCARE DATA INTEGRATION AND MINING FOR NEXT-GENERATION MEDICAL RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND SERVICE IN LOUISIANA
Technologies and Opportunities for post-disaster healthcare recovery and planning
March 16-17, 2006
Louisiana Tech University, Ruston LA

Workshop Synopsis: Over the past decade, clinical and research-oriented medical disciplines have become increasingly data-intensive. The advances in automated data collection technologies in these domains have led to an unprecedented growth in the size, complexity, and quantity of collected data, a large proportion of which is currently inaccessible for analysis by those concerned with health care policy development and medical resource optimization, to epidemiologists, or to computer scientists for enhanced medical discovery. Furthermore, in direct health-care applications the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is on the verge of becoming practical, further increasing data growth and leading to a data-rich but information-poor healthcare system. In the aftermath of recent disasters, the dispersal and loss of medical records and lack of data for enhanced clinical care has lead to renewal of demand for the development of novel technologies designed for the organization and mining of this data for enhanced healthcare delivery, and clinical, computing and biomedical research.
